Dutch in the workplace

In your own language you are completely at home with the jargon of your profession. Taking this Plezier in taal course will prepare you for your new job by enabling you to quickly become familiar with the jargon and terms used in your profession in the Dutch workplace.

The course Dutch in the workplace is designed to get you familiar with the everyday terms used in The Netherlands in your profession. Your course could look like the course I taught some years ago that was aimed specifically at nurses who had come from South Africa and Great Britain to work in The Netherlands.

In the first lesson we practiced those often-used sentences that you have in every job. By selecting the basic sentences wisely, the students could quickly start speaking in Dutch, even after the first lesson. The nurses were immediately complemented on their Dutch by their colleagues and that is always good for self-confidence. Of course, it didn’t stop at learning sentences; we also used interactive teaching methods to make grammar or idiom clear. We also practiced specific vocabulary and jargon that was necessary for their work. The hospital had provided ample examples such as amniocenteses forms that we practiced filling in. We also used role-play to create actual situations. The students found that very enjoyable and it created an enjoyable and relaxed atmosphere where a lot was learnt in a short time.

After this intensive language course lasting a couple of weeks, the nurses could communicate in Dutch with their patients. They followed it up two months later with a course to improve their Dutch writing skills.

Cultural differences

During the lessons we are, of course, sensitive to cultural differences. It is often not just a question of how you say something, but what you say in which situation!
